Raise is currently hiring a Distribution Senior Civil/Geotechnical Engineer on behalf of our client. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Civil/Geotechnical Engineer to provide professional engineering, estimating, planning, design, field support, and quality management services for medium-complexity utility projects and operations. Our Client, is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada.

Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.

Description

We are currently hiring a Distribution Senior Civil/Geotechnical Engineer E4 to support engineering projects and operations within a complex utility environment.

The role will focus on civil and geotechnical engineering activities related to distribution infrastructure, including geotechnical assessments, foundation design, field investigations, construction support, utility structures, underground infrastructure, and related engineering studies.

You will support distribution infrastructure projects and will be responsible for developing safe and practical engineering solutions, resolving complex technical and field engineering problems, supporting project delivery, and providing professional engineering guidance in accordance with applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and professional practice requirements.

The successful candidate will work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating with project managers, engineering professionals, contractors, field personnel, and regulatory authorities. This position requires strong technical judgment, practical problem-solving abilities, and the ability to develop safe, cost-effective, and constructible engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop safe engineering solutions for medium-complexity civil and geotechnical projects and utility operations.
  • Perform geotechnical assessments, investigations, engineering studies, and analysis.
  • Design and assess geotechnical foundations and other civil infrastructure.
  • Provide engineering support for distribution infrastructure, including underground and overhead utility systems.
  • Assess field conditions and develop practical engineering solutions to address construction and operational requirements.
  • Support feasibility studies, preliminary design, detailed design, field investigations, and project implementation.
  • Provide technical engineering support during construction and field activities.
  • Serve as Professional of Record (PoR) where required and provide professional engineering oversight.
  • Review engineering designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Interpret engineering specifications, codes, standards, permitting requirements, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Resolve complex and unusual design and field engineering problems through independent studies and analysis.
  • Exercise independent engineering judgment in selecting appropriate information, methods, designs, and technical solutions.
  • Support project and operations management in achieving safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives.
  • Recommend changes to project plans, engineering designs, and estimated costs where required.
  • Review contractor work and recommend payment for completed work.
  • Prepare progress reports, technical reports, engineering documentation, and recommendations.
  • Coordinate work schedules and support contractor activities.
  • Conduct construction staging, temporary works, excavation support, and constructability reviews.
  • Support engineering quality management, document control, engineering checks, reviews, and records management.
  • Ensure engineering work complies with applicable professional practice and quality management requirements.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of engineering standards, processes, and practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and advice to other engineering professionals and project team members.
  • Engage effectively with contractors, regulatory officials, Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), and other project stakeholders.
  • Support permitting activities and ensure engineering solutions meet applicable regulatory and design requirements.
  • Conduct field investigations and assessments as required.
  • Apply sound engineering judgment to select appropriate engineering methods, designs, and solutions.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years of civil/geotechnical engineering experience in Canada or equivalent.
  • Experience in geotechnical assessment, foundation design, construction support, and utility/infrastructure projects.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes, standards, EGBC requirements, and BC construction practices.
  • Experience with construction staging, temporary works, excavation support, constructability reviews, field assessments, and permitting.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and technical report-writing skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate effectively with contractors, engineers, project teams, and regulatory authorities.
  • Experience with GeoStudio, gINT/OpenGround, CAD, and other engineering analysis/design software.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Nice to haves:
  • Canadian utility, distribution, or infrastructure experience.
  • Experience with geohazard assessments, trenchless design, seismic design, or ground improvement.
  • Experience with underground/overhead utility infrastructure, utility structures, and geotechnical testing.
  • Familiarity with MMCD, MoTI Utilities Manual, City of Vancouver Utilities Design Manual, and similar standards.
  • Experience with feasibility studies, preliminary/detailed design, field engineering, and BC permitting requirements.
  • Education and Certifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.
  • P.Eng. or P.Geo. registered with EGBC, or eligible for registration in BC.
  • P.Eng. (Civil/Geotechnical) in good standing preferred.
  • Access to a Permit to Practice with EGBC required where applicable.
  • Familiarity with digital signing and sealing requirements is an asset.

Additional Information

  • The successful candidate must reside in the Lower Mainland.
  • The position is based in Burnaby, BC.
  • The successful candidate must be willing to work 5 days per week onsite during training and familiarization, potentially for the first 6–7 months.
  • The position may transition to a hybrid work arrangement subject to business requirements and management approval.
  • Relocation assistance is not provided.
  • Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s Licence is required.
  • The successful candidate must be willing to travel, including by plane and boat, as required.
  • Must have access to a personal vehicle and smartphone and be able to use them for business purposes as required.
