Instrumentation Technologist

Raise is currently hiring a contract Instrumentation Engineer on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our Client, is a Canadian global leader in exploration, mine engineering, and environmental protection.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.
Description
As an Instrumentation Engineer, you will support the design and development of instrumentation and control systems for heavy industrial operations. Working with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will help translate process requirements into detailed engineering deliverables that ensure safe and reliable plant performance.
This role blends technical design with practical field awareness, including instrument and valve sizing, preparation of engineering documents such as P&IDs, instrument indexes, and loop drawings, and support for vendor evaluations and procurement activities.
You will contribute to instrumentation design across the project lifecycle while ensuring systems meet operational, safety, and engineering standards. Occasional travel to project sites may be required to support field coordination and installation activities.
Responsibilities
- Serve as or support the instrumentation discipline design lead on multi-discipline engineering project teams.
- Perform instrument and valve sizing and selection for heavy industrial plant applications.
- Prepare and develop engineering documentation including instrument index, control philosophy, P&IDs, instrument data sheets, loop drawings, cable schedules, and instrument location plans.
- Develop PLC and panel drawings and contribute to control system documentation.
- Prepare and evaluate bid documents for materials and instrumentation related contracts.
- Review vendor shop drawings and technical submittals to ensure compliance with project specifications and engineering standards.
- Assist in preparing project material cost estimates and schedule inputs for engineering activities.
- Coordinate with engineering teams, contractors, and vendors to support project execution.
- Support field activities and engineering verification during installation or commissioning when required.
- Sign and/or seal technical documents including drawings, specifications, data sheets, engineering lists, and engineering calculations as required.
- Travel occasionally to project sites in Northern Saskatchewan and Ontario to support engineering activities and site coordination.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of experience supporting instrumentation and control design within heavy industrial or process plant environments.
- Strong experience with field instrumentation selection, valve sizing, and control system components.
- Familiarity with industrial networking protocols and industrial control system (ICS) security practices.
- Experience preparing instrumentation documentation such as P&IDs, loop drawings, instrument indexes, and cable schedules.
- Ability to review vendor documentation and ensure compliance with engineering specifications and standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong communication, coordination, and technical documentation skills.
- Experience supporting engineering work in mining, processing, or large industrial facilities is considered an asset.
Education and Skills
- Degree in Engineering, preferably in Instrumentation, Electrical, or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng) designation or eligibility to obtain registration in Canada.
- Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation systems, valves, control systems, and process measurement technologies.
- Experience working with engineering design documentation and technical standards.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and support project teams in a fast-paced engineering environment.
