Job Overview
The Senior Electrical Engineer is responsible for overseeing and managing the electrical and controls design of expansion and maintenance capital projects executed by third-party engineering firms. This role ensures compliance with client standards, specifications, and applicable industry codes while maintaining alignment with project budgets and schedules. The position collaborates closely with Project Execution, Operations, and Shared Services to ensure all project and organizational requirements are effectively integrated into design deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee electrical and controls design for capital projects, ensuring compliance with client standards, industry codes, and regulatory requirements
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders to define and incorporate project requirements into engineering deliverables
- Manage third-party engineering firms to ensure alignment with approved scope, schedule, and budget
- Review and approve engineering deliverables including drawings, technical reports, and material lists
- Develop project scope, schedules, cost estimates, execution plans, and risk assessments
- Evaluate vendor proposals and recommend equipment selections based on technical merit, cost, and delivery timelines
- Provide technical support during construction and commissioning phases
- Incorporate lessons learned into future project designs and processes
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers
- Lead or support departmental initiatives and continuous improvement efforts
- Ensure compliance with regulatory, environmental, health, and safety requirements
- Maintain regular communication with project managers, supervisors, external engineering firms, and operations teams
- Oversee development and implementation of technical solutions across stakeholders
- Design and support electrical systems including 120/208V, 480V, and 4160V systems
- Design and support components such as motor control centers, transformers, generators, switchgear, relays, and metering systems
- Perform cable and conduit sizing, grounding design, and cathodic protection system support
- Design and support PLC-based control systems including Allen-Bradley or equivalent platforms and operator interfaces such as Wonderware
- Support motor control circuits, valve actuators, PID controllers, and emergency shutdown systems
- Design and support instrumentation including transmitters, gauges, RTDs, thermocouples, and gas/flame detection systems
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
- Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible experience in engineering and project management
- Experience with large horsepower turbine and motor-driven centrifugal compressor stations
- Knowledge of industrial electrical systems and hazardous classified areas in compliance with NEC requirements
- Professional Engineer designation preferred
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and prioritize effectively
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to resolve complex technical and business issues
- Effective communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Strong collaboration skills with awareness of cross-functional impacts
- Demonstrated ability to drive innovation and manage change
Working Conditions
- Office-based environment with occasional field work
- Deadline-driven work with multiple concurrent priorities
- Occasional overnight travel to project sites may be required, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
