Senior Procurement Engineer – Nuclear

Summary
- Under minimal supervision, supports the strategic sourcing and acquisition of all technical materials, components, equipment and services necessary for complex engineering and design projects bridging the disciplines of engineering and the supply chain.
- Requires collaboration with design engineers, project managers, and vendors to ensure projects are delivered on time, on budget, and to the highest quality standards.
- Combines engineering knowledge with a strategic procurement mindset to evaluate and qualify all technical materials and services required for sourcing and manufacturing.
- Reviews drawings and other technical documents for manufacturability and ensures that all work is performed in compliance with technical and quality requirements.
- Performs supplier assessments and risk reviews to obtain high-quality supply chain performance. May mentor lower-level Procurement Engineers.
Major Duties
- Works with design engineers during the product development and design phases to define technical specifications and requirements for materials, components, and manufacturability.
- Reviews and interprets engineering drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and other technical documents to align with procurement needs, providing technical guidance to internal teams on material selection, manufacturing processes, and supplier capabilities.
- Leads the technical evaluation and qualification of new suppliers, including on-site assessments of production capability, quality systems, and risk profile.
- Resolves technical issues with suppliers during development and manufacturing, ensuring their processes can consistently meet technical and quality specifications of the components.
- Coordinates and executes strategic sourcing plans for all critical components, including make-or-buy analyses for complex or custom-fabricated components.
- Ensures all procurement activities comply with company policies, industry regulations, and ethical sourcing practices.
- Conducts research to identify suppliers and manufacturing partners to develop supplier panels that support the company’s long-term vision for manufacturing.
- Assesses and mitigates supply chain risks associated with a new product, including single-source dependencies, intellectual property concerns, and geopolitical instability.
- Mentors lower-level Procurement Engineers.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree in a science or technical field plus a minimum of 10 years of technical procurement and/or supply chain experience is required. Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of degree.
Skills & Knowledge
- Expert knowledge to interpret complex engineering drawings, specifications, and BOMs.
- Must be familiar with relevant quality control standards and nuclear industry regulations.
- Ability to effectively manage team priorities and maintain strong supplier relationships.
- Experience working with procurement software or systems (e.g., Microsoft Project, Enterprise Resource Planning).
- Excellent communication skills to work effectively with all levels of staff and management, vendors, and customers.
- Good problem identification and problem resolution skills.
- Excellent report development and presentation skills.
- Experience with material machining, forming, welding, GD&T, and nuclear quality standards is a plus.
