Fire Protection Engineer

Term: ASAP for a one-year term

Location of Work: Chalk River, ON

Hybrid, Remote and onsite requirements at CRL. 2 to 3 days onsite at CRL weekly

Hours of Work: All on-site work will be conducted during standard working hours of Monday to Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Fire Protection Engineer offers expert knowledge in fire protection and fire department emergency services, ensuring compliance with relevant fire protection codes and standards for equipment and systems. They also notify the appropriate authorities of any violations, facilitating the necessary corrective actions. The Fire Protection Engineer is a professional who uses their engineering and scientific expertise to conduct reviews of new construction plans, inspections to ensure compliance with applicable fire codes, and construction documentation examination. The individual will make recommendations about building design and materials to prevent fires starting and spreading.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree (Honors) in Engineering or Applied Science from a university of recognized standing.
  • A degree in Fire Protection, Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • Must be eligible for licensure as a Professional Engineer with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO)

Experience

  • Two or more years of experience working on fire protection within the Canadian Nuclear Industry.
  • Registered with Professional Engineers Ontario; OR holds P.Eng. status in Canada. (P.Eng. license can be transferred within provinces in Canada).

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Good understanding of the National Building Code, National Fire Code, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and CSA N-293 as well as CSA-N393 standards and their applications, and ability to keep abreast of any changes.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate potential fire hazards and risks.
  • Understanding of relevant codes, standards, and regulations governing fire safety.
  • Analyze fire safety documentation for compliance and effectiveness.
  • Ability to create, review, and maintain detailed fire safety documentation.
  • Ensuring accuracy and completeness in fire safety assessments and documentation.
  • Ability to evaluate requests and assess their impact on fire safety.
  • Ability to effectively communicate findings and recommendations regarding exemption requests.
  • Ability to plan, organize/coordinate meetings and projects within the fire service and external groups.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage deadlines.
  • Team player.
  • Problem-solving.
  • Technical documentation and reporting.
  • Risk assessment and mitigation.
