Raise is currently hiring a Distribution Engineer – Projects on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our Client, is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada.

Description

As a Distribution Engineer – Projects, you will support project teams by providing Owner’s Engineer (OE) and Professional of Record (POR) services for capital infrastructure renewal and expansion programs. This role involves a mix of overhead and underground distribution line design, complex engineering analysis, and high-level coordination with internal stakeholders and external electrical consultants. Overhead – and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages at or below 35kV. • Support operations, maintenance, repair, replacement and expansion of the Distribution System. • Investigate, analyze and solve a variety of engineering problems, including the more challenging and unusual, by developing engineering techniques, devising new approaches and/or applying existing criteria in new ways • Provide technical guidance, instruction, and assistance related to the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and modifications of equipment You will be responsible for ensuring that all designs—including primary voltage customer services and device settings—adhere to safety and reliability standards while serving as the technical authority for engineered solutions.

Responsibilities            

  • 1. Engineering Analysis & Design
  • Load Flow & Capacity: Utilize CYME DIST to assess circuit capacity, load connection feasibility, voltage profiles, and phase balancing.
  • Protection Coordination: Use CYME TCC to conduct studies and determine sizing/settings for fuses, reclosers, switchgear, and voltage regulators.
  • Thermal Studies: Use CYME CAP to perform thermal studies of cables in ducts, optimizing ampacity and establishing thermal limits.
  • Structural Analysis: Conduct non-linear pole analysis and non-standard overhead line designs using SPIDAcalc (experience with PLS-CADD/PLS-Pole is a strong asset).
  • Compliance: Ensure all pole line structures, conductor tensions, and clearances comply with CSA 22.3 No. 1.
  • 2. Owner’s Engineer (OE) & POR Support
  • Deliverable Review: Act as the OE to review engineering deliverables submitted by external consulting companies for quality and compliance.
  • Technical Oversight: Review customer electrical consultant submissions for primary voltage services, including single-line diagrams, switchgear design, and grounding/surge arrestors.
  • POR Accountability: Fulfill Professional of Record duties for non-standard or custom-engineered solutions, adhering strictly to EGBC Quality Management Guidelines.
  • 3. Stakeholder Collaboration
  • Coordinate with Planning, Project Delivery, Standards, and Field Operations (District Line and Cable Crews) to develop safe, economical distribution solutions.
  • Review and manage variance requests from standard requirements.

Qualifications

  •  8 years of experience in a relevant engineering field with 5 years of expericne in utility-scale MV/HV distribution design.
  • Proven background working with medium or high-voltage distribution systems.
  • Direct Project experience acting as an Owner’s Engineer (OE) or in a similar oversight capacity for capital projects.
  • Expert in Load Flow, TCC, and Thermal analysis modules.
  • Maintain Driver's License Class 5 throughout the term of the contract
  • Willingness to travel
  • Technical Skills (Nice-to-Have)
  • Proficiency in CYME (DIST, TCC, CAP) for system modeling and protection coordination.
  • Experience with non-linear analysis and SPIDAcalc.
  • Familiarity with PLS-CADD or PLS-Pole.
  • Advanced SPIDAcalc user with non-linear design experience.
  • Deep understanding of CSA 22.3 No. 1 and EGBC Quality Mgmt.
  • Education and Certifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering recognized by universities in Canada, Power Engineering preferred
  • P.Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
  • Safety & Equipment
  • Certifications: Active Basic First Aid certification (per WorkSafe BC regulations).
  • PPE: Must provide own Personal Protective Equipment for site visits.
  • Hardware/Software: High-performance laptop (Intel i7/AMD 7+, 32GB RAM, Dedicated GPU).
  • Licenses for SPIDAcalc and Notarius/Consigno (digital signature tool).

             

Additional Information

  • Attend Company provided Safety, Environmental, and Technical training (online and in-person).
  • Maintain Basic First Aid certification (required for field visits under WorkSafe BC regulations).
  • Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
  • Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
