Raise is currently hiring a contract team member on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader.
Overview
Our client is seeking a Construction Superintendent (Intermediate) to backfill a senior superintendent retiring this October, supporting field construction operations at the Strathcona Refinery near Edmonton, Alberta. The role calls for a strong electrical and instrumentation background, since the current construction superintendent bench is largely mechanical and needs that expertise to manage contractors through the details of E&I scopes. In addition to safety, schedule, and production oversight of contractor crews at Strathcona, the role carries flexibility to travel to project sites across Western Canada, from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Nanaimo, BC, as client ramps up midstream construction work through 2027 and 2028. The base schedule at Strathcona runs four 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday, and strong performers may have the opportunity to move into a longer-term position.
Responsibilities
- Plan, coordinate, and control daily field operations for assigned E&I crafts and subcontractors
- Understand, interpret, and execute work from electrical and instrumentation drawings, plans, and specifications
- Deliver assigned scope within the contracted schedule and budget
- Coordinate with multi-discipline engineering teams to monitor and control scope, schedule, and cost
- Manage field crews, including oversight of earthwork equipment operation and maintenance where E&I scope intersects with civil/mechanical work
- Respond to field and client information requests in real time
- Champion worker safety programs and hold crews accountable to site safety standards
- Oversee contractor fabrication, construction, and hook-up activities for E&I systems during the Execution Phase
- Serve as an active member of the Project Team (PT) when formally assigned
- Act as the field-level interface between the work face and the Construction Site Manager or Construction Site Lead
- Apply working knowledge of Construction Materials Testing procedures and relevant ASTM standards to E&I installation and QA/QC
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 10 years of construction experience, with a background in electrical and/or instrumentation (a trades background in these areas is acceptable).
- Past experience as a Construction Superintendent, or in a similar field supervision capacity, on major industrial capital projects.
- Industrial plant experience, such as power generation, manufacturing, oil and gas, or a similar processing environment; general commercial or building construction experience alone does not meet this requirement.
- Experience in-field construction planning, execution, and completions.
- Familiarity with Construction Materials Testing procedures and ASTM standards.
- Ability to interpret plans and specifications and manage contractor safety, schedule, and production performance.
- Enthusiastic, self-starter with a desire to provide excellent service to clients.
Preferred Qualifications
- Willingness and ability to travel and rotate to project sites across Western Canada (Winnipeg, Manitoba to Nanaimo, BC) for assignments ranging from three to four weeks up to five to six month rotations. Candidates based at Strathcona who are not mobile will still be considered.
