Reservoir Quality Specialist
Raise is currently hiring a contract team member on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader.
Responsibilities
- The Senior Reservoir Quality Specialist provides expert evaluation and prediction of reservoir quality across oil and gas exploration, appraisal, development, and production activities. The role integrates petrography, sedimentology, diagenesis, petrophysics, geochemistry, and basin history to determine the geological controls on porosity, permeability, saturation behavior, and reservoir performance.
- The successful candidate will characterize reservoir texture, mineralogy, pore systems, depositional facies, and diagenetic evolution using core, cuttings, thin sections, conventional core analysis, special core analysis, well logs, and related subsurface data. The specialist will assess the effects of compaction, cementation, dissolution, clay distribution, grain coatings, fractures, and hydrocarbon charge on reservoir properties. These observations will be used to explain existing reservoir quality and predict its distribution away from well control.
- The role will design fit-for-purpose analytical programs, including petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, fluid-inclusion analysis, stable-isotope analysis, mercury-injection capillary pressure, and other core-based studies. Results will be integrated with depositional-environment interpretations, burial and thermal history, seismic data, petrophysical models, and static reservoir models. Typical applications include prospect risking, reservoir presence and effectiveness assessment, net-to-gross estimation, permeability prediction, saturation-height modeling, completion planning, and uncertainty characterization.
- The individual will provide technical assurance for internal and contractor-generated studies, manage specialist laboratory programs, and maintain traceable analytical data and interpretations. The position will communicate key reservoir-quality risks, uncertainties, and business implications to multidisciplinary teams and will mentor less-experienced geoscientists.
Skills and Qualifications
- Master’s degree or PhD in geology, sedimentology, petroleum geology, geochemistry, petrophysics, or a related geoscience discipline.
- 10 + years of relevant oil and gas industry experience, including exploration, appraisal, development, and/or production projects.
- Advanced knowledge of clastic and/or carbonate sedimentology, petrography, diagenesis, and reservoir characterization.
- Strong understanding of the geological controls on porosity, permeability, capillary pressure, wettability, and saturation behavior.
- Demonstrated ability to integrate core, cuttings, petrographic, petrophysical, geochemical, well-log, and seismic information.
- Experience developing reservoir-quality models and predicting reservoir properties beyond well control.
- Ability to distinguish depositional controls from burial, diagenetic, structural, and fluid-related effects.
- Strong technical judgment, uncertainty assessment, report writing, project management, and multidisciplinary communication skills.
- Ability to mentor staff, provide technical assurance, and influence subsurface and business decisions.
Preferred Knowledge and Experience
- Expertise in deepwater clastic, shallow-marine, fluvial, aeolian, carbonate, unconventional, or fractured reservoirs.
- Experience with thin-section petrography, SEM, XRD, cathodoluminescence, core analysis, MICP, fluid inclusions, stable isotopes, and burial-history modeling.
- Knowledge of formation damage, rock-fluid interaction, geomechanics, and their effects on well productivity.
- Experience integrating reservoir-quality interpretations into petrophysical models, geological static models, saturation-height functions, and volumetric assessments.
- Familiarity with software such as Petrel, Techlog, PetroMod, Geolog, Interactive Petrophysics, ArcGIS, Spotfire, Python, or equivalent applications.
- Experience managing laboratory contractors, developing analytical scopes of work, and assuring data quality.
- Demonstrated technical leadership through mentoring, publications, conference presentations, or recognized subject-matter-expert status.
