Overview
This I&C Technician role supports an industrial plant in Kentucky, keeping the process control systems, instrumentation, and electrical infrastructure behind production safe, reliable, and secure. The technician troubleshoots and calibrates PLCs and field instruments, supports scheduled maintenance alongside vendors and contractors, and helps deliver small automation projects under the direction of the Process Automation Engineer. A key part of the role is writing calibration procedures translated from vendor documentation, so plant procedures match how the equipment actually works. This is a hands-on, plant-floor position, with off-hours support as needed.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot and calibrate process control systems, including PLCs, HMIs, field instrumentation, and supporting infrastructure, with off-hours support as required.
- Write calibration procedures by translating vendor documentation into clear, plant-ready instructions.
- Perform scheduled maintenance on equipment and process automation systems alongside vendors, contractors, and internal maintenance teams.
- Assess risks before and during troubleshooting and maintenance work to protect safe, reliable plant operations.
- Follow the Management of Change (MOC) process for every control system change, testing changes before they are loaded into production.
- Maintain the physical and cyber security of control systems, including backups, patches, and updates.
- Support project and improvement teams, implementing small projects under the direction of the Process Automation Engineer and other Operations engineers.
- Apply and promote control system best practices across the site.
- Install, remove, and maintain equipment and building systems as needed.
- Operate forklifts and other industrial mobile equipment as required.
- Assist plant operators with manual handling of raw material or product during breakdowns to support troubleshooting.
- Uphold safety, environmental, and quality procedures, and keep work areas clean through routine housekeeping.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
- Two-year technical or trade school degree, or at least three years of equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of instrumentation and electrical installations, including Motor Control Centers (MCCs), pressure transmitters, limit switches, HMIs, relay logic, PLCs, and ladder logic.
- Willingness and ability to write calibration procedures from vendor documentation.
- Strong troubleshooting, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
- Solid hardware and software development skills for control systems.
- Working understanding of automation networks.
- Competent with Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs daily and up to 100 lbs periodically, and to climb ladders and stairs to work at height inside and outside the plant in all weather.
- Safety-minded approach to work in a dusty, moderately noisy plant with high-voltage electrical systems, moving equipment, fumes, and some hazardous chemicals.
