Distributed Energy Resource Engineer
- Pay Rate: $110.00/hour, depending on experience

Raise is currently hiring a Distributed Energy Resource Engineer on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our Client, is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada
Note: The primary pay rate is based on the rate for an incorporated contractor who owns their own business. However, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in a T4 arrangement, where applicable.
Description
The Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Engineer will provide specialized technical expertise to the Distributed Energy Resource Planning team. In this role, you will review complex net metering and self-generation applications and conduct critical distributed generation interconnection studies. The focus of this position is on overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages at or below 35kV (primarily $le$ 25kV). You will balance system performance, reliability, and risk management with strategic investments to facilitate the seamless integration of DERs into the grid.
Responsibilities
- Interconnection Studies: Complete distributed generation interconnection studies and review complex net metering and self-generation applications.
- System Planning & Forecasting: Conduct technical and economic planning studies to identify short- and long-term distribution system requirements. Issue reliable system load forecasts to meet domestic load demands efficiently.
- Performance Monitoring: Evaluate distribution system performance, identify vulnerabilities, and initiate appropriate corrective measures to mitigate risk.
- Grid Automation & Protection: Contribute to the development of automation and protection schemes designed to optimize system performance, minimize losses, maximize reliability, and facilitate smooth DER interconnection.
- Asset & Investment Strategy: Assist in developing short- and long-term asset management strategies. Prepare and defend business cases for system improvements and expansion requirements to secure financial backing.
- Complex Problem Solving: Investigate, analyze, and resolve challenging or unusual engineering problems by adapting existing criteria or devising innovative technical approaches.
- Regulatory & Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with internal and external stakeholders to develop collaborative solutions. Author comprehensive documentation and technical responses to defend distribution system decisions in regulatory submissions.
Qualifications
- (8) years of experience in a relevant engineering field related engineering experience working with overhead and underground electric utility distribution systems operating at voltages at or below 35kV (primarily at or below 25kV).
- Deep familiarity with generator interconnection standards, specifically CSA C22.3 No.9 and IEEE 1547.
- Strong technical understanding of inverters and associated inverter standards, including UL 1741.
- Proven experience analyzing Distributed Generation equipment interconnection and performing detailed interconnection studies.
- Maintain a valid Class 5 Driver’s License throughout the contract term.
- Preferred Skills & Attributes
- Hands-on experience with power system simulation software, specifically CYME and EMTP (or equivalent Power Engineering software), is considered a strong asset.
- Familiarity with ’s internal systems, policies, and operational procedures is highly advantageous.
- Exceptional English proficiency with well-developed technical writing and presentation skills to effectively communicate complex engineering concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to work self-motived and collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
- Willingness to travel as required to meet project or system needs.
- Education and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (recognized by Canadian universities); a specialization in Power Engineering is highly preferred.
- P.Eng and will be required to Provide Proof of Permit to Practice, registered with EGBC when hired
Additional Information
- Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
- Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
