Construction Technologist
- Pay Rate: $64.85/hour, depending on experience
- Contract Length: 52 weeks
- Location: Surrey, British Columbia
Raise is currently hiring a Construction Technologist on behalf of our client. This is an excellent opportunity for a construction, engineering, project management, or technical professional to support planning, estimating, scheduling, procurement, and field coordination activities for construction projects. Our client is one of the largest electrical energy suppliers in Canada.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.
Description
The Construction Technologist will perform a variety of duties related to construction planning, estimating, scheduling, cost control, procurement, and field coordination.
This role bridges office-based project planning with field execution. The successful candidate will prepare cost estimates, quantity takeoffs, schedules, procurement documentation, and progress reports while providing technical advice and coordination to field crews, contractors, and project teams.
The role requires strong construction knowledge, analytical abilities, communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed construction cost estimates based on engineering specifications, contract conditions, labour, equipment, and material requirements.
- Prepare quantity takeoffs and direct cost calculations for materials and components.
- Research and recommend methods and procedures to minimize labour, equipment, cost, and scheduling impacts.
- Assess project risks and incorporate appropriate considerations into estimates and pricing.
- Apply established markups to direct costs to support full overhead recovery.
- Develop work schedules and coordinate construction activities.
- Track project progress using graphs, charts, and other reporting tools.
- Review Cost/Progress Reports and identify discrepancies between projected and estimated costs.
- Assess the financial impact of schedule changes and recommend appropriate actions.
- Compile schedules of pay items for estimates, bid submissions, and subcontract tender documents.
- Review contractor submissions and verify quantity and cost calculations.
- Obtain technical information and pricing from suppliers.
- Review drawings, specifications, and material lists for procurement requirements.
- Prepare documentation for construction materials, equipment, and subcontract procurement.
- Maintain current records of equipment costs, production rates, and material costs.
- Provide technical advice and coordination to field crews, construction trades, contractors, and internal resources.
- Participate as a member of construction project teams.
- Assist with site surveys, basic drafting, and design updates as required.
- Prepare technical reports and project documentation.
- Assist with contracts, requisitions, and Requests for Proposals.
- Provide technical direction and work coordination to construction trades.
- Support project management activities related to cost, schedule, procurement, and construction execution.
- Apply strong analytical skills to assess project cost and schedule information and recommend corrective actions.
- Support construction estimating, scheduling, and project coordination activities.
Qualifications
- 5–10 years of experience in construction, engineering, project management, or related fields.
- Strong knowledge of Civil, Mechanical, or Electrical disciplines and applicable codes/standards.
- Experience with construction estimating, scheduling, costing, and project coordination.
- Knowledge of generation, substation, transmission, and distribution construction.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, negotiation, and teamwork skills.
- Ability to coordinate construction trades and work with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency with estimating, scheduling, costing, design, and project management software.
- Basic drafting and ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical reports.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License required.
- Nice to haves:
- Transmission or Distribution Line experience.
- Electrical utility, industrial, infrastructure, or heavy construction experience.
- Experience with construction estimating, cost control, site surveys, and field coordination.
- Project management experience with a technical or trades background.
- Experience with electrical testing equipment.
- Education and Certifications
- Diploma of Technology from a recognized institute of technology, OR
- Degree in a construction-related field (Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, Business Administration, Quantity Surveying, Architecture, or Forestry), OR
- A related Red Seal / Trades Qualification (e.g., Electrician, Power Line Technician, Winder, Millwright, or General Trades 1).
Additional Information
- This is a full-time position based in the Surrey office.
- The role requires regular site visits across British Columbia.
- After approximately 6 months, there may be an opportunity to work from home up to 2 days per week, subject to business needs and management approval.
- Fully remote work is not available for this position.
- This is a Safety Sensitive and Security Sensitive position.
