Health and Safety Advisor
Pay Rate: $55.56 – $88.89/hour, depending on experience
Contract Length: Initial term to December 31, 2026, with extension to one year anticipated
Start Date: October 19, 2026
Location: Vancouver, British Columbia (on-site, marine terminal)
Raise is hiring a Health and Safety Advisor on behalf of our client. They're expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader. Our client is a globally competitive integrated energy company that extracts, produces, and provides energy from a mix of sources, ranging from oil sands to renewable fuels.
Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification. We'll also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.
Description
Our client is looking for a Health and Safety Advisor to join operations at their Vancouver marine terminal. In this role, you'll be a visible, field-based leader who champions safety culture, guides safe work execution, and ensures strong adherence to Environment, Health, and Safety (EH&S) standards. The role is split 80% field and 20% office, with both based at the terminal. You'll spend most of your time working hand-in-hand with field personnel and contractors to reduce risk, deliver just-in-time coaching, and drive continuous improvement through Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles. Active project and construction work is underway at the site, so you'll support both day-to-day terminal operations and project activities.
Responsibilities
Field duties (80%):
- Participate in safety meetings and toolbox talks: attend safety meetings and contractor toolbox talks.
- Conduct worksite safety assessments: regularly complete Critical Control Assurance (CCA) and Enablon inspection checklists to confirm compliance with critical safety controls and protocols. Provide feedback and coaching to close gaps.
- Complete and support work execution activities: ensure hazards are identified and appropriate controls are in place during work activities, including project and construction work.
- Assess contractor worker qualifications: evaluate contractor workers' safety training and competencies to confirm they meet required standards.
- Conduct field assessments on high-risk standards: assess the implementation of high-risk safety standards in the field, such as confined space entry and working at heights.
- Provide just-in-time coaching: coach field personnel on the spot when unsafe practices are observed. Report systemic issues or ongoing trends to leadership.
- Identify and communicate safety hazards: promptly identify and communicate hazards so they are addressed. Escalate high-risk gaps or persistent trends to your leader.
- Support incident investigations: assist with safety incident investigations when requested by the incident owner.
- Support contractor management: ensure contractors follow contractor management requirements.
Office work (20%):
- Support hazard identification for scopes of work: help identify potential hazards in planned work activities.
- Support contractor regulatory compliance: guide contractors on meeting WorkSafeBC and other applicable safety regulations and standards.
- Support development of contractor EH&S plans: help develop comprehensive health and safety plans for contractors.
- Participate in and coach on contractor health and safety plans: collaborate on detailed plans, including exposure control and ventilation.
Qualifications
- 10 years of proven safety experience in high-risk work settings.
- Terminal experience strongly preferred. Marine experience is also an asset.
- Experience supporting projects or construction work in an operating environment.
- Strong understanding of safety regulatory requirements, specifically WorkSafeBC and the BC Occupational Health and Safety Regulation.
- Experience supporting high-risk work such as confined space entry, excavation, working at heights, and control of hazardous energy.
- Strong time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- An effective listener who seeks to understand the safety support needs of operations and clearly communicates company standards and regulatory requirements.
- Experience promoting a culture that encourages reporting, learning, and continuous improvement.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Able to interact effectively with all levels of leadership.
- Understanding of Human and Organizational Performance principles to support safety culture.
Education and Certifications
- Diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), or demonstrated H&S competency supported by relevant experience.
- A recognized safety certification (e.g., CRSP, CRST, CSO).
