Firewall Specialist
- Pay Rate: $74.59/hour, depending on experience

Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.
Description
The Firewall Specialist Resource will be responsible for the intake, triage, and comprehensive governance of security change requests, with a specific focus on firewall and internet proxy modifications. In this hybrid role based in Vancouver (or remote within PST hours), you will ensure that all proposed network access rules align precisely with corporate security standards, architecture designs, and industry frameworks like NIST. Beyond change management governance, you will serve as a subject matter expert and dedicated firewall specialist assigned to support high-priority technology initiatives across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Security Change Request Review & Governance
- Intake & Triage: Manage the high-volume intake, triage, and detailed evaluation of network security change requests (including Firewall and Internet Proxy requests) to ensure completeness, operational accuracy, and technical validity.
- Rule Validation: Review proposed firewall configurations—including source, destination, ports, protocols, NAT, and segmentation—and validate them against approved design documentation and network zoning standards.
- Compliance & Standards: Audit incoming requests against internal cybersecurity policies, hardening standards, and established industry frameworks (e.g., NIST).
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Proactively identify ambiguous, incomplete, or high-risk requests, driving direct clarification and remediation with requestors and technical teams.
- Process Optimization: Actively contribute to continuous improvement initiatives for firewall change workflows, accelerating turnaround times while maintaining strict risk controls.
- Technical Project Support
- Provide specialist-level technical consultation on firewall architecture and network security policies for various enterprise technology initiatives.
- Support the secure implementation of zero-trust principles and network segmentation across hybrid environments.
Qualifications
- 5 years of working experience in Information Technology with at least three (3) years in cyber security or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals:
- TCP/IP, UDP, routing protocols, IP addressing, subnetting
- VPNs, NAT, segmentation, and zoning
- SSL, TLS Inspection, IPSEC Tunnels
- Hands-on experience with firewalls and network security technologies is an asset
- Working knowledge of cloud principles with emphasis on security and identity in a hybrid environment.
- Strong understanding of Firewall security best practices and hardening standards
- Good understanding of zero trust principles and network segmentation.

- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication for interacting with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Attention to detail in reviewing complex firewall rules and dependencies
- Ability to manage high volumes of requests and prioritize effectively
- Education and Certifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, or a related field
- Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience may be considered
- Preferred Certifications
- Core Networking & Security
- CISSP (Certified Information Systems Security Professional)
- CompTIA Security+
- GIAC Firewall (GCFW) or GIAC Security certifications
- ITIL (for change management processes)
- Vendor certifications (e.g., Cisco Palo Alto, Fortinet, Check Point)
Additional Information
- Every contractor must supply their own Windows 11 Laptop computer for the duration of the assignment.
- Every contractor must supply their own “Smart Phone”. This is needed to gain access to the Organizations network.
