Raise is currently hiring a contract team member on behalf of our client. They’re expanding their team to meet growing needs, making this a unique opportunity to work with an industry leader.

Overview

The Ventures Planner plays a critical role in evaluating, developing, and advancing capital projects and new business opportunities within the refining and chemical industries. This position partners closely with venture executives, planning managers, engineering teams, and business stakeholders to perform strategic, economic, technical, and commercial analyses that support investment decisions. The role ensures projects are economically viable, technically feasible, and aligned with organizational objectives from concept development through project approval.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Planning & Opportunity Assessment
    • Identify and evaluate business opportunities that align with company strategies, growth plans, and operational objectives.
    • Support the development of new business ventures, expansions, and capital investment opportunities.
    • Conduct market, competitive, and value chain analyses to assess business potential and strategic fit.
    • Participate in strategic planning initiatives, technology evaluations, and opportunity screening workshops.
  • Economic Modeling & Business Case Development
    • Develop detailed business cases, economic models, and financial analyses to support investment decisions.
    • Perform project economic evaluations, including cash flow modeling, profitability analysis, and sensitivity assessments.
    • Analyze market, operational, and commercial assumptions to optimize project value and mitigate risk.
    • Evaluate trade-offs between technical, operational, and commercial alternatives to identify optimal solutions.
  • Capital Planning & Portfolio Management
    • Coordinate the development of preliminary project cost estimates and schedules with engineering and project teams.
    • Support annual capital planning, budgeting, forecasting, and investment prioritization activities.
    • Monitor project portfolios to ensure progression aligns with business priorities, schedules, and technical maturity requirements.
    • Collaborate with site leadership and business units to prioritize and advance capital projects.
  • Project Governance & Stage-Gate Support
    • Lead and facilitate project gate reviews and investment approval processes.
    • Prepare, review, and coordinate gate packages, appropriation requests, and supporting project documentation.
    • Maintain project assumptions, economic justifications, and business basis records to support project lifecycle management.
    • Ensure compliance with established project development and governance frameworks.
  • Technical & Process Evaluation
    • Apply engineering and process design knowledge to support project development activities.
    • Lead or participate in process optimization studies aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing costs.
    • Assess technical feasibility, operational risks, and potential process improvements across project alternatives.
    • Support hazard identification and risk mitigation throughout project development.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration & Business Alignment
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Manufacturing, Engineering, Supply Chain, Commercial, Marketing, Logistics, Global Projects, and Finance.
    • Facilitate alignment between technical, commercial, and business objectives during project evaluation and planning.
    • Communicate project recommendations, economic findings, and strategic insights to leadership and key stakeholders.
    • Build strong working relationships across business functions to support effective decision-making.
  • Supply Chain & Market Strategy Support
    • Conduct value chain assessments from production through end-user markets.
    • Support the development of supply strategies and market entry plans for new products and business opportunities.
    • Evaluate supply chain impacts and commercial considerations as part of project investment decisions.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Experience in refining, petrochemical, chemical processing, or related industrial sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of project economics, financial modeling, and capital investment analysis.
  • Experience developing business cases and conducting economic evaluations for major capital projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex business and technical challenges and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence stakeholders at multiple organizational levels.
  • Strong project coordination and stakeholder management capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting capital project portfolios and stage-gate project development processes.
  • Knowledge of process design standards and their application in project planning and execution.
  • Experience conducting process optimization studies and evaluating alternative process configurations.
  • Understanding of supply chain analysis, market assessments, and commercial strategy development.
  • Proven ability to integrate technical, economic, and commercial considerations into business recommendations.
